The Story

Water is a crucial resource for life. In some parts of the world this resource is already limited. Hydraloop therefore pursues the vision of using water twice. Water recycling is the most efficient and affordable way to use less water. And the easiest way to recycle water is to clean it right where you use it.

Hydraloop enables and empowers people to lower their water consumption by 45% and waste water by 45% without having to compromise on living comfort or hygiene. Hydraloop reduces carbon footprint and in countries with cooler winter climates also saves energy. Plumbing needs to be adjusted so it is 'recycle ready'. With all stakeholders it was decided to build 14 homes in Leeuwarden including a Hydraloop unit. This sustainable housing project offers home owners of all ages to live together on the waterfront in a car-free area. The project has involved only local companies. Hydraloop units are produced in the Netherlands, in an area with high unemployment, ensuring economic growth and job security.

Success Factor | Hero Moment

This project shows that if all stakeholders join and support the mission of building sustainable homes including decentralised water recycling, it is possible to create affordable homes for all ages with a high quality of life and contributing towards a more sustainable future. The project is the first of many 'recycle ready' building projects in the Netherlands and can be replicated anywhere in the world.
