The Story

In the tourism sector as well, sustainability has ceased to be a trend. For many people it is an increasingly important factor in their choice of vacation accommodation. The Stanglwirt organic and wellness resort on the Wilder Kaiser Mountain range in Austria is decades ahead of this development and has been continuously expanding its sustainable offerings ever since.

Already at the beginning of the 1980s, today's Stanglwirt Balthasar Hauser constructed a building biology hotel including innovative biomass heating on the site of his parents' farm with inn. The first step in the direction of sustainable vacation was taken, the ecological management of agriculture continued. Both make the Stanglwirt unique today and the family business the only organic farm with integrated luxury hotel.

In 2019, the Hauser host family again showed their attachment to the local nature with the expansion of the spa to include a herb garden and natural cosmetic treatments. The energy for a large part of the 12-hectare hotel complex is self-generated.

The closure period during the Corona pandemic was also used positively and numerous conversion and renovation works were carried out with a constant focus on measures in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency.

Success Factor | Hero Moment

At the "Global Wellness Summit 2016", the Tyrolean environmental pioneer of the hotel industry, Balthasar Hauser, was awarded the "Global Wellness Award" as "Leader of Sustainability".

In recent decades, Balthasar Hauser transformed the over 400-year-old inn into a 5-star organic and wellness resort. The topic of "sustainability" has always played a decisive role in his planning. Already during the construction of the hotel, care was taken to use only natural resources and to integrate the house sustainably into nature. For the energy supply of the new wellness worlds, the five-star house relies on natural mountain water heated by geothermal energy from its own springs.

An environmentally friendly heating system, in which wood waste from the surrounding sawmills is burned, has been supplying the entire plant with heat since the 1990s. In addition, the Stanglwirt Bio and Wellness Resort obtains 100 percent CO2-free green electricity from Tyrolean small hydroelectric power plants.

The Stanglwirt cooperates together with the WWF regarding the reduction of the already low CO2 footprint and supports the environmental experts of the BOKU in their long-term sustainability projects for CO2 compensation.
